Fourth Year Elective at TUFTS Medical School:

Title: Student Elective in Gastroenterology and Nutrition

Category: Flexible

Director: Elihu M Schimmel, MD

As a student you will participate in the postgraduate training program in Gastroenterology and Nutrition. You will work up 3 or 4 patients per week in the GI and Digestive Disease Clinics, seeing cases such as inflammatory bowel disorders, liver disease, and consultations from primary care providers. You will participate in daily work rounds with the GI Fellow and Staff Attending Physician for the inpatient consultation service. There are weekly outpatient clinics and Medical conferences, all of which are teaching sessions; at all of these meetings you will present your findings and assessment of the patients you have evaluated. Your diagnostic skills will be encouraged, reading time will be ample, and we will discuss pathophysiology in depth. If you have an interest in endoscopy, you will participate as an observer in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including interventional modalities such as argon laser coagulation and photodynamic therapy. With the staff, you will learn the intellectual skills of thoughtful analysis of clinical data as well as those of interpretation of endoscopic, radiological and histolopathologic findings during this period. You will work with a Fellow in Gastroenterology and a rotating Resident in Medicine. Daily nutrition rounds with the dietitian and pharmacist are open to your participation. You will have the further opportunity to learn from the epidemiological techniques involved in clinical investigation with Dr. Pedrosa, Chief of Hepatology and Director of the Endoscopy Program.
